The Algorithm Purge: Why Engagement Bait Won’t Scale Your New Account

If you scroll through your X (formerly Twitter) timeline or YouTube creator forums right now, you will see a very specific, very loud demographic melting down.

Accounts that used to regularly boast 30 million monthly impressions are suddenly struggling to hit 5 million. Channels with 100k+ subscribers are waking up to red “Demonetized” banners.

But the algorithm isn’t broken. It’s working exactly as intended. We are witnessing a massive platform correction against engagement bait.

The Reality of the Engagement Bait Economy

For the last few years, an entire digital economy was built on a foundation of absolute sand. Creators figured out that they didn’t need a product, a tangible skill, or even an original thought to build an audience. They just needed to game the funnel.

This birthed the “Professional Reply Guy.”

Their entire workflow consisted of turning on push notifications for massive accounts, waiting for a drop, and racing to be the first to paste a recycled meme, a generic platitude, or a stolen viral video in the replies.

Why the Grift No Longer Scales

To be clear: engagement bait isn’t entirely dead. But it can no longer scale for new accounts.

The massive legacy accounts that built their following years ago by spamming the timeline and retweeting each other in circular funnels are still coasting on momentum. But the platforms have officially pulled the ladder up behind them.

If you are a new creator trying to hit your first 10,000 followers by relying on unoriginal replies and engagement bait, you will be shadowbanned into obscurity. The algorithm recognizes the “slop” and actively throttles it.

The Reused Content Trap on YouTube

Over on YouTube, the purge is even more brutal. The platform is running massive sweeps to completely strip monetization from channels under the banner of “Reused Content.”

The middlemen are being starved out. If your entire content strategy relies on someone else’s labor, you are living on borrowed time. YouTube is actively penalizing channels that rely on:

They don’t just give you a strike; they freeze your AdSense. You can spend a year cultivating an audience using someone else’s videos, but the minute YouTube updates its detection tools, your revenue drops to zero.

Original Content: The Only Scalable Creator Strategy

Seeing grifters panic over losing their reach is validating for one simple reason: it proves that taking the hard road is the only strategy that survives the long game.

Yes, the alternative is tedious. Building an actual audience from scratch requires:

Building a Storefront, Not a Funnel

In the case of indie game dev, it means literally coding the physics engine yourself. When I build a game like Divine Orbit from scratch, I own every single pixel. When I write a script comparing AAA laziness to my indie engine’s kinetic momentum, I am creating transformative value that the algorithm actively wants to push.

When you build your foundation on original work, you don’t end up writing furious manifestos at midnight because an algorithm update deleted your identity.

The engagement farmers rented an audience using stolen clips, and now the landlords are changing the locks. The actual creators are building permanent storefronts. When the dust finally settles on this algorithm purge, the only ones left standing will be the people who actually built something of value.
